At what level is the presence of copper in tap water indicative of severe degradation of the copper plumbing?

We have a reverse osmosis water purification system that seems to lower the pH, even with correction cartidges. This apparently leeches copper from the hosehold pipes. Copper has been measured up to 1.6ppm. Does this mean the copper pipes will corrode right through some day? How long?
